Morro Bay is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, on the coast of California that has a population of about 10,000. In the past, Morro Bay was part of a Chumash American Indian settlement near Morro Creek. The Spanish Portola Expedition was the first European land exploration in the Alta California region and descended the Los Osos Valley, camping near present-day Morro Bay in 1769. The town of Morro Bay was officially founded by Franklin Riley in 1870 as an export port. of dairy and agricultural products.

In addition to being the name of the city, Morro Bay is the name of the large estuary that lies along the north shore of the bay itself. The largest bay in which the local area is located is Estero Bay, which also encompasses the communities of Cayucos and Los Osos. Much of Morro Bay is a wildlife area and a part is designated a bird sanctuary. Morro Bay is located in a natural harbor, making it a fantastic place to see marine life. It is a natural refuge for animals such as seals, sea lions, sea otters, plovers, peregrine falcons and more and there are two marine protected areas known as Morro Bay State Marine Recreational Management Area and Morro Bay State Marine Reserve. Like underwater parks, these marine protected areas help conserve ocean wildlife and marine ecosystems. Currently, tourism is the biggest contributor to the city's economy, along with commercial fishing.

Cinematic Trivia: Morro Bay served as the main setting for the Pixar film “Finding Dory” (2016), in which it is mentioned that Dory's childhood home was the fictional Marine Life Institute, known as the “Gem of Morro Bay, California”.

>> WHY THE CITY IS CALLED MORRO BAY

A curiosity is that the name of the city is due to the fact that in its territory rock hill, a large rock of volcanic origin in the form of a round hill that is about 176 meters high. Originally Morro Rock surrounded by water, but the northern channel was filled in to form the city's harbor. The surroundings of the Morro Rock base are open to visitors, with parking lots and trails. However, climbing the rock itself is prohibited except with a permit, due to the risk of injury and because it is a peregrine falcon reserve.

>> THE CHIMNEYS OF MORRO BAY

One of the most striking features of the Morro Bay setting is the three chimneys of the Dynegy power plant, which played an important role in Morro Bay and in providing electricity to the Central Coast and Central Valley of California. The plant was built in the 1950s and Dynegy hoped to modernize it with a new combined cycle plant. The proposed retrofit that had been planned was rejected and the plant was closed in February 2014. In 2018, a joint venture of German energy company EnBW and Seattle-based Trident Winds announced its plan to get the grid connection from plant to connect a floating wind farm with up to 100 floating wind turbines and a floating substation.
