BERLINER FERNSEHTURM: THE TV TOWER
THE Berliner Fernsehturm is the German name of the famous TV Tower in Berlin, one of the postcards of the beautiful German capital. The Tower was built near the iconic Alexanderplatz square between 1965 and 1969 at the request of Walter Ulbricht, leader of the government of German Democratic Republic (GDR), known as East Germany.
The inspiration for the construction was the TV Tower in the city of Stuttgart, also in Germany, and the first artificial satellite on Earth, Sputnik. It was built with 365 meters high and started to have 368 meters with the installation of an antenna in 1997. The structure is the tallest in Europe and the second largest in the European Union. Around 1 million people visit the TV Tower in Berlin every year.
At the top of the TV Tower, there is a metallic sphere of 32 meters in diameter and 4,800 tons in is one observation platform that receives visitors daily and is located approximately 207 meters from the ground. It is estimated that it is possible to see a radius of more than 40 km from the top of the tower! In addition, there is also a revolving restaurant located in the center of the sphere, which rotates every 30 minutes. It is 4 meters above the observation deck.
Climb the TV Tower in BERLIN
After purchasing your ticket at the ticket office or online, you will need to go through security (metal detector) before accessing the tower. For this reason, avoid taking objects that can be considered dangerous or large bags and backpacks that can be stopped for a search. On the ground floor, there are restrooms and a small bar. Access to the TV Tower in Berlin is via the two small elevators that take around 40 seconds to reach the observation deck. As the place is very popular with tourists, it is common to find queues to climb to the top. So, if you have a very tight schedule in the city, it might be a good idea to buy the ticket with a date and time to avoid queues and have preferential entry.
Going up the elevator, you arrive at the observation site. It is fully glazed, providing a 360º view of Berlin. Try to go on a not too cloudy day so you can enjoy the tour better. At each point of the Tower there are reference plates to get an idea of what is in each area that is being observed.

On the observation deck there is a bar called Bar 203 and you can take the opportunity to have a drink watching the beautiful panoramic view of Berlin. Bar 203 is simply the tallest in town! For those who want to have an even more intense experience, the suggestion is to book a time at the Sphere Restaurant and the official website informs that from there it is possible to see a radius of 60 km away on days with clear weather. The restaurant is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm and serves breakfast and lunch. A hint for those who don't want to queue, have a fancy meal and even admire the views from the observation deck, is to include in the itinerary the lunch packages super special prices.
