Check out our experience visiting Café des Deux Moulins, the famous café that served as the setting for the incredible French film “The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain”.
THE CAFÉ DES DEUX MOULINS AND AMÉLIE POULAIN
Café des Deux Moulins (Café dos Dois Mills, in French) is a café in the Montmatre district of Paris. Its name is a tribute to the two historic mills that are nearby, the Moulin Rouge and the Moulin de la Galette. The restaurant gained fame for being the setting of the graceful film “The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulin” (2001). It was there where the character Amélie, who gives the name to the title, worked. The film's story is graceful and delicate and we not only saw it a few times, we went to a play as well. The film shows several sights in the beautiful neighborhood of Montmartre and the story is told in a theatrical and innovative way.
After the film's success, the decor incorporated a photograph of the character, played by talented actress Audrey Tautou. Several details inside the restaurant are reminiscent of the movie. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and has a menu full of French cuisine options. There are also several options of hot drinks, cocktails and desserts, for those who just want to have a coffee and a sweet treat.

COFFEE DES DEUX MOULINS: OUR EXPERIENCE
On one of our trips to Paris we decided to get to know the Café des Deux Moulins better. We made an internet reservation in advance for lunch. When we got there we were taken straight to our table. The interior is all lit up, has small tables and a bar area, and reminds us of scenes from the graceful film.
To start, we ordered an onion soup, a traditional dish of French cuisine, which was toasted on top. For the main course I tried to choose a healthier option, which came with a green salad with vegetables and potatoes topped with melted cheese.
To be very honest, the experience was nice, but we had high expectations for the food and found it quite disappointing. The onion soup was greasy and the main course was bland with no seasoning or flavor. There are several options for cheaper and better quality restaurants in Paris in the Montmartre region very close by. For those who liked the movie, it is worth going to see it, but I suggest having a coffee and that's it. It would not be necessary to have lunch or dinner, as the food is definitely far from the best. Anyway, we didn't regret going there, as it was nice to know what the place was like and what it has to offer.
