Take advantage of your stay in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, to taste delicious dishes of the local cuisine. We were at the Savotta restaurant and had an amazing experience getting to know more about typical Finnish food. Check out this tip!
TYPICAL FINNISH FOOD
We love to taste local dishes every time we visit a new country. In addition to taking us out of our comfort zone, gastronomy allows us to discover new flavors, seasonings and ingredients. We've had pleasant surprises while traveling and, for this reason, we are even more motivated to try new things wherever we go. We knew absolutely nothing about Finnish cuisine before we ventured into the country. Although we only tasted some of the flavors, we were very positively surprised. One of the big surprises was the way they combine traditional cuisine with haute cuisine. Fish and meat (pork, beef or reindeer) play a prominent role in traditional Finnish dishes in some parts of the country, while dishes elsewhere traditionally include various vegetables and mushrooms.

THE SAVOTTA RESTAURANT
The Savotta Restaurant is located right in front of the stairs that lead to Helsinki Cathedral, a very famous area of the city. Due to its strategic location, it is very easy to include it in the itinerary around the city, without having to worry about changing routes. The restaurant is cute, with charming, rustic decor, with colorful fabrics and staff wearing typical Finnish costumes from previous centuries. The crockery on which the dishes are served are antique and hand-painted. The idea is to transport customers to offers an experience with genuine Finnish food and atmosphere. It's impossible not to feel super comfortable there.

Savotta's name means a place of logging country. Therefore, the interior decoration and dishes are inspired by Finnish forests and thousands of lakes, with a dash of Finnish nostalgia from the last decades and timber traditions. The restaurant uses only ingredients from Finnish forests and lakes and from carefully selected small suppliers. Savotta has a menu filled with Finnish delicacies, which include a wide variety of fish and even sheep stew, reindeer meat and bear salami!
OUR EXPERIENCE AT SAVOTTA RESTAURANT
Our experience could not have been better! We ordered a delicious dish for two called (in Finnish) Karjalanpaisti. This is a stew prepared using a combination of pork and beef, but lamb can also be used. The dish accompanied a delicious mashed potatoes and flavored beets. We were hungry after having visited the Suomenlinna Fortress in the morning and we devoured everything quickly.

After lunch, we ordered a coffee, which was served in a super charming way with an old ceramic set. And, to accompany, a delicious dessert called mustikkarattänä, a typical red fruit tart, served with fresh fruit and cream, which was very tasty!
