Check out the reasons to stay at the Hotel Casa das Senhoras Rainhas, inside the old walls of the medieval city of Óbidos, in Portugal.
HOTEL CASA das Senhoras Queens
O Hotel Casa das Senhoras Rainhas it is a 4 star hotel located in the friendly city of Óbidos, famous for its castle and its medieval past. The hotel is very close to the walls, which can be seen from the windows and balconies of each of its rooms (one double room in the tower and nine double rooms on the inner floor, 7 of which have a balcony).
In addition, it has a bar and a restaurant (Restaurant Comendador Silva) of typical Portuguese food and, as a courtesy, all guests can taste the Ginginha de Óbidos, the city's famous drink, which is a very sweet type of liqueur.
The stay at the hotel also includes a rich breakfast, with a wide variety of breads, croissants, orange juice, typical Portuguese custard tarts, coffees, teas and even plant-based milk. Breakfast is served at the Comendador Silva Restaurant, accessed directly by a staircase.
ROOMS OF THE CASA DAS DAS RAINHAS HOTEL
Hotel rooms don't have a number, but names! Each of them is named after one of the former Portuguese consort queens, such as Santa Isabel, D. Maria I, D. Urraca, D. Leonor, D. Beatriz de Gusmão, D. Filipa, among others. They have a warm decor and are equipped with air conditioning, safe, LCD TV and minibar and almost all have a small balcony overlooking the medieval wall. The hotel also offers special packages for those who are celebrating a specific date and want to celebrate in style.
CURIOSITY: THE HOTEL OWNER
A fact that we discovered there is that, since 2015, the novelist Aguinaldo Silva (famous for “Vale Tudo”, “Tieta”, “Pedra sobre Pedra”, “Fera Ferida”, “A Indomada”, “Senhora do Destino” , “Duas Caras”, “Império” and many other soap operas) owns the hotel. Upon taking over the property, he underwent a complete renovation so that it becomes a reference in the “boutique hotel” style in the region. We ended up finding out that he owned it because the bar and restaurant areas are filled with photographs of the writer with actors, actresses and television celebrities.
In 2018, the renovation of a house next to the hotel promoted the creation of an inn called Guesthouse Vila de Óbidos, a more economical lodging option with 4 bedrooms, 24-hour reception and fully equipped shared kitchen.
OUR EXPERIENCE AT THE HOTEL CASA DAS SenhoraS RAINHAS
Our passage through Óbidos was included in a car trip that we did from north to south of Portugal over 3 weeks. But, driving in Óbidos is not an easy task because the city is walled and it is forbidden to enter the wall, in theory. But, even with signs not to enter the wall by vehicle, this rule is not respected and we were instructed by the hotel not to respect the signs to reach the hotel by car. Of course, the hotel does not have a garage and you have to be lucky enough to find a spot in the narrow alleys of Óbidos. We had a good dose of patience and managed to park the car relatively close. I absolutely do not recommend going to Óbidos with large suitcases, as there are no sidewalks, the streets are cobbled and the chance that you will have to stop far from the hotel is high.
Well, after the struggle to enter the wall and find a vacancy, we arrived at the hotel and were attended by a super helpful employee (who we had already spoken on the phone minutes before) who welcomed us, gave us the key to our room and informed us that we had the right to drink a Ginjinha de Óbidos whenever we wanted. Of course we don't refuse!
BREAKFAST AT THE HOTEL
Since Óbidos is a super small town, just one night at the hotel. Our room was simple but very comfortable. There was also complimentary mineral water waiting for us. Upon check-in we received a form to let us know what we would like to have for breakfast and what time we would like to eat it. In the morning, we arrived at the hotel's restaurant and our table was already waiting for us. Due to the pandemic, there are social distancing protocols and tables are organized so that one guest is not close to the others. The breakfast was delicious, with everything we had ordered (vegans, rest assured because there are many options: breads, jams, fruits, cereals, orange juice, tea, coffee).
With a spacious room, comfortable bed and pillows, excellent location, polite staff and excellent breakfast, it is impossible not to recommend this hotel highly. We believe that it is an excellent option for lodging in the city, but remember that staying within the walls of Óbidos has its setbacks.
