A HAMBURGUERIA MOTHER BURGER
Founded in 2019, Mother Burger is a totally vegan burger! After all, vegan food is not salad, it is any food with nothing of animal origin (meat in general, milk, cheese, butter, gelatin, honey). Mother Burger invested in creativity and flavor to show that vegan food can be full of flavor, texture and color! The idea is to show that vegan food does not need to be consumed only by vegans, but by everyone. Mother Burger can currently be found at 4 units spread across Lisbon!
The menu is full of well-balanced hamburger options, generously sized and all served with bread with red onion, lettuce and tomato. There are options with UnMeat Burger (hamburger imitation), seitan (vegetable meat produced with a wheat protein, gluten) and Protein Burger (made with black beans, lentils, chickpeas, mushrooms, beets, oats and coconut oil). In addition to the hamburgers, you can try crunchy nuggets, fries (regular or sweet), and milkshakes! As the official website says: “The Burger Change is Real”.
OUR EXPERIENCE AT MOTHER BURGER
We got to know Mother Burger once when we were at Amoreiras Shopping Center and had hit a hunger pang at lunchtime. Mother Burger is a fast food style burger joint, which is not exactly what we were looking for, but we decided to try our luck. I ordered one burger queen (a protein burger with alheira paste, cheddar, mayonnaise and caramelized onion) and Paulo ordered a kiss my burger (a protein burger with confit mushrooms, cheddar and mayonnaise). To go with it, we ordered fries and crispy nuggets.
The meal was hearty, the hamburger is big, and the side dishes were well thought out. As for the taste, we had a different expectation in our heads, thinking that we would find something more with a taste of the Beyond Burger or the Impossible Burger (vegetable burgers that are very famous in the USA and that we adapt to our taste). However, the flavor of the hamburger is more like a homemade bean burger. He's tasty, but he doesn't taste like a beef burger, you know? We thought we should have asked for the What The Burger, which is the burger that uses the plant-based version of the UnMeat Burger, which we believe is more like the flavor we were expecting. We could also have swapped the Protein Burger for an UnMeat Burger for just €0.85. Well, it's on to the next opportunity! Anyway, for us it's always worth having one more experience without involving animal cruelty and we think it's super valid to have a Portuguese hamburger place dedicated to this.
